v9 · Specimen 2026 · ball, slot, color trail
The ball rolls. Color follows.
The synthesis: v4's physical-but-muted mechanism feel, v6's hairline linework (cut channels, tickmarks, domino pips), v8's knob and rocker (kept; those landed). New from the Rams reference set: toggles as slots with rolling balls that fill with enamel color behind them. Buttons are honest cuts in the field, not pucks sitting on it. v9 now carries the v6.1 enamel palette through the ball trails, pips, faders, and field markers.
The Kugel
ball in slot · enamel color follows as it rollsThe defining v9 mechanism. The toggle is a hairline-outlined slot cut into the field. A white ball sits inside, perfectly fit. When activated, the ball rolls from one end to the other — and the slot behind it fills with enamel color. The color is the trail the ball leaves. No on/off is read as a separate semantic; the position of the ball IS the state, and the fill simply confirms the journey.
Click any toggle. The ball rolls; the slot behind it fills with its assigned enamel color. The fill and roll are synchronized — they share the same easing curve so they read as one continuous motion.
Field & Cuts
v6 linework returns · cut depth as the only depthWhere v8 made the field pillowy and ambient, v9 makes it flatter and more precise. The field is a clean white sheet; everything interactive is cut into it. Hairlines define the edges of every cut. Three depths of cut are the only shadow vocabulary.
Each cut has a hard top-edge dark line (the cut going in) and a soft bottom highlight (the opposite wall). The hairline outline around the cut sharpens its edge. Pucks are the things that ride inside cuts.
Pips
domino quantity · v6's grammar returnsFrom v6. A 3×2 grid of dots, lit in domino patterns to indicate quantity (1–6). Useful for things like "approved by 3 of 6 reviewers" or "phase 4 of 6" — small graphic state without taking the width a label would. Pip patterns read at a glance: 1 dot is center, 2 is opposite corners, 3 is diagonal, 4 is corners, 5 is corners + center, 6 is the full pattern.
Knob & Rocker
kept from v8 · refined with hairlinesA puck in a circular cut. A small enamel marker on the puck's edge rotates with it. Tickmarks on the cut's ring stay stationary. When the knob is the active focus, a matching enamel dot floats above it in the field.
Five round cells in a long cut. Click any cell — it rises out of its cut, and a small enamel dot appears above it in the field. The dot belongs to the field, not the cell.
