v5 · Specimen 2026 · the magic of the real

The interface, as matter.

Therme Vals at dusk. Sixty thousand stones stacked into walls so thick the room itself becomes a body. A single warm light, low in the chamber, catches the edges of things. Water finds its level. This version is that room: components are not placed on a surface — they are carved into it, or emerge from it. Depth is structural. Light is direction. Motion is settling.

Material

the body of architecture · material compatibility

One material family. Oiled oak in the default chamber, board-formed concrete in the alternate. Brass for what is precious. Three mineral pigments for status: deep moss, ochre, oxblood. Every color must belong to the others — the room before color theory.

Matter — three depths

A single warm light at 2700 Kelvin — the bulb in a stone chamber. Not red, not yellow. The temperature of dusk, dimmed.

Light

light on things · directional, warm, low

A single source, upper-left. Shadows are long, soft, and warm — not the crisp directional of a workshop, but the slow fall of a fixture set into stone. The accent color is the light itself, made matter where it gathers.

The lit edge

Where the bulb's wash touches the top of a slab, the material warms. The brightest moment in the room is the top edge of a button, of a card, of the typographic stroke.

The deep cut

An input is a recess in the matter. Light cannot reach the bottom of it; the inset shadow is what the eye reads as cut. The cut feels colder than the surface.

Depth — the surface and its absence
proud · the slab
proud-mid · raised
proud-deep · floating
inset-cut · carved
inset-deep · pocket
flat · the wall itself

Five depths and the wall. Most components live at proud or cut; the deeper steps are reserved for modals and pockets.

Inscription

type engraved · the nine sizes of voice

Display is a serif (Source Serif 4), set into the surface with a top highlight and a bottom-shadow inscription. Body is Inter — the working language. Mono is reserved for product nomenclature. Headings are not painted on; they are cut into the wall.

primitives, carved or proud, with substance
Button · the slab, the brass inlay, the inscription

Default buttons are slabs proud of the wall — the top edge catches light. Hover: the light catches more. Press: the slab settles into a cut. The primary is brass set into the chamber.

Input · cut into the matter

Inputs are recessed deeply enough that the type sits in shadow. Focus draws the field a millimeter deeper and rings it in brass.

Tag · chip · key
Default Linked Approved In review Blocked K

Tags are stone chips with a beveled edge. Status dots are small LEDs set into the wall. Kbd is a brass cap whose top edge catches the light.

Tabs · the carved channel

The strip is a channel carved into the wall. The active tab is a slab that emerges from it.

The table is a register carved into a recessed panel. Rules are faint bevels — a hairline highlight above, a hairline shadow below. The selected row is washed warm by the bulb.

Hover any card. The light catches its top edge more strongly and the slab lifts a hair — composure, not aggression.

The Nine Qualities

Zumthor · Atmospheres · the framework

From Atmospheres (Birkhäuser, 2006). Each quality is a dimension of atmospheric perception. Each design move below is how that quality is honored in v5.

01
ZumthorThe body of architecture
Surfaces are thick. Borders are deep. Slabs carry visible weight. Components have substance — they are not paper.
02
ZumthorMaterial compatibility
One material family — oak, brass, oiled paper. Status colors are mineral pigments, not pure CMYK. Every color belongs.
03
ZumthorThe sound of a space
Motion suggests reverb. Slower easings (360ms base, 520ms deep). Things settle the way water finds its level.
04
ZumthorThermal presence
Default is warm oak (dusk). Alternate is cool concrete (morning). Color temperature does the emotional work.
05
ZumthorSurrounding objects
Faint stratification in the background, edge wear in highlights and shadows. The room shows it has been used.
06
ZumthorComposure and seduction
Motion invites, then receives. No bounce. No flash. The interface waits to be touched and then accepts it.
07
ZumthorInterior / exterior tension
Surfaces are visibly layered — proud, mid, deep, cut, deeper. Depth is structural, not decorative.
08
ZumthorLevels of intimacy
Generous display sizes (a cathedral 64px); intimate labels (a quiet 11px). Scale carries hierarchy.
09
ZumthorLight on things
A single warm source from upper-left. Shadows are long, soft, golden-warm. The accent is the light itself.
